Whether you are interested in art, band, baseball, cheerleading, dance, educational activities, football, gymnastics, horse riding, indoor swimming, lacrosse, music, outdoor activities, science, soccer, sports, tennis, theater, volleyball, weight-loss, or simply interested in becoming gainfully involved in fun-filled activities during the summer break, there are usually many employment opportunities for those skilled and experienced in summer camp environment. One does not have to be a world-class athlete or a superb outdoorsman for being gainfully employed at a summer camp. Often there are many positions available –ranging from Summer Camp Program Director, Summer Camp Group Leader, Summer Camp Activities Coordinator, to Activities, and Transportation Specialists.

As a member of the team responsible for ensuring success of a summer camp program, you will share responsibilities for providing a safe, caring, fun-filled, and exciting summer camp activity program for all attendants –typically youth ranging from 11 to 18 years of age. Considering that most summer camp programs are relatively short duration programs (between two to four weeks), summer camp jobs are usually fast paced, and rarely offer opportunities for on-the-job training or allow learning by trial and error. A typical summer camp program may involve between 20 to 30 students, and the typical student to instructor ratio is usually around 4:1.

A summer camp job at a summer camp facility that provides outdoors (such as backpacking, canoeing, mountain biking, mountaineering, rock climbing, sea kayaking, whitewater rafting, etc.) activities, an instructor or group leader would be expected to not only be an excellent role model, but also to have an ability to teach such skills to the participants in a safe manner. Considering that most summer camp attendees are teenagers, a team leader must also have excellent people skills and vast experience working with that age group. Other outdoor skills that may come handy would probably include cooking, water purification, ability to effectively plan and oversee group activities, menu planning, resource management (food, laundry, transportation, equipment maintenance, etc.), as well as being able to handle any medical emergencies. CPR training is usually a plus, and a safe driving record is almost always considered to be an absolute requirement. Of course, excellent people skills as well as an ability to work long hours in challenging conditions, conflict resolution skills, and an ability to motivate others are often a plus.

If you are interested and skilled/experienced in indoor activities such as those listed a the beginning of this document, however, the summer camp job requirements will of course vary accordingly.

Even though summer camp jobs are usually quite a bit of fun, they may not offer the greatest financial rewards. However, the satisfaction and the thrill of participating in a fun-filled summer activity, and being able to make a difference in the lives of our youth in itself is usually quite rewarding.
