Connecticut Coalition for Justice in Education Funding Leads Challenge to State Education Funding in Court

Fifteen students and families from eight communities, and a coalition of municipalities, school boards and education groups filed a lawsuit recently charging that State of Connecticut is not meeting its obligation to provide quality public education.

Republican Gov. M. Jodi Rell has been named as the lead defendant in this complaint that further alleges that inadequate school funding has disproportionately affected minority students.

The above legal challenge is being led by the Connecticut Coalition for Justice in Education Funding (CCJEF). According to the plaintiffs, Connecticut schools are being underfunded by as much as $1 billion to $2 billion a year.

This is not the first time The State of Connecticut has been dragged in court over matters related to education in Connecticut. One of the recent cases had resulted in the state Supreme Court ruling (1996) that the segregation in Connecticut schools was unconstitutional. About time!

The Connecticut Coalition for Justice in Education Funding includes the following municipalities: Bloomfield, Bridgeport, Danbury, East Hartford, Hamden, Hartford, Manchester, New Britain, New Haven, New London, Norwalk, Plainfield, Putnam, Stamford, Stratford and Windham.
